Detective Surprenant : The Girl with Stoned Eyes

Inspired by the crime novels of author Jean Lemieux, the series Detective Surprenant follows in the tradition of procedural thrillers. We follow the complex investigation led by Sergeant Detective André Surprenant (Patrick Hivon). This six-episode series offers a tightly woven plot set in the Magdalen Islands archipelago, with its villages, fishing ports, and the Cap-aux-Meules police station. This gripping crime drama features characters who lead seemingly ordinary lives but harbor secrets as dark and harsh as the Islands’ landscape and climate. Surprenant must untangle the many leads that take him deep into the hidden corners of the Islands, uncovering buried secrets and grasping the stakes and motivations behind the crimes.
Detective-Sergeant André Surprenant takes charge of the report on the disappearance of Rosalie Richard, daughter of the mayor of Îles-de-la-Madeleine, even if it means canceling his vacation just hours before his departure. The next day, the teenager's body is found in a sordid scene that sends the whole village into a frenzy.
Accustomed to investigating traffic accidents and minor crimes, the police officers of Cap-aux-Meules are overwhelmed by the violence of the crime. Surprenant, who has worked in major crimes in Montreal, leads his inexperienced team with tact. But he learns that the investigation has been entrusted to Chief Inspector Sébastien Gingras, an arrogant rival dispatched from Quebec City. Tension quickly mounts between the two men as the investigation becomes more complex and the list of suspects grows longer. Fortunately, Surprenant can count on his colleague Geneviève Savoie to help him solve the murder.
In this isolated archipelago where everyone knows everyone, the murder of young Rosalie shakes up the small community of the Madelinots and puts all the inhabitants of the Islands and their secrets under the spotlight.
The disappearance of Rosalie, the mayor's daughter, forces Surprenant to cancel his vacation. Félix and Edouard find a bag of cocaine washed up on the beach, while Rosalie's car is found abandoned in front of the "La Caverne" bar. Worries intensify, and an upset Maria decides to go on vacation without her husband. The motives for the disappearance are still unclear, but Rosalie seems to be involved in drug trafficking.
Rosalie is found murdered on the beach in what appears to be a staged scene. Roméo is convinced of the guilt of Cormier, a trafficker to whom Rosalie owed money. Surprisingly, his rival from Quebec City takes over the investigation. The whole island community is in an uproar. Félix and Édouard secretly go to Cormier's house to sell him the cocaine they've found. Surprenant doesn't like working with Gingras.
Félix and Édouard find themselves in the middle of an armed altercation between Cormier and Roméo. Surprenant is embarrassed to catch his son at the home of a drug dealer. Tension mounts between Gingras and Surprenant, who are at loggerheads over the investigation. Cégep professor James Flaherty is said to have seen Rosalie shortly before her death.
Gingras orders Lapierre's arrest, although Surprenant finds it hasty. The clues point to him, as he has already been convicted of a similar murder. Flaherty confesses to an intimate relationship with Rosalie. Cormier hides on the boat of Albéni, a fisherman bringing drugs to the islands. Another islander is found dead.
Incredulous at Lapierre's arrest, Surprenant continues the investigation on his own. His stubbornness irritates his colleagues, who begin to doubt his judgment. Geneviève discovers a new element that calls the whole investigation into question. Cormier and Valérie escape Albéni's clutches and decide to denounce him to Surprenant.
Geneviève and Surprenant discover a theft of drugs that leads them to a lead. Surprenant is blackmailed and lies to protect her son. The murderer's identity is revealed as the police close air and sea routes to stop his escape. The final battle takes place on the open sea, with Surprenant's life at stake.
