The Strange Province

Synopsis:
Frank and Carl, two cryptozoologists and ghost hunters, take us across the Quebec landscape in search of the creatures that populate the myths and legends deeply rooted in the province’s collective imagination.
The Strange Province is a “mockumentary” about Quebec’s mythical creatures. Through Frank and Carl’s camera, we explore the towns where legends were born: La Corriveau in Quebec City, the black horse of Trois-Pistoles, and more. Along the way, real experts are interviewed, including Bryan Perro, who explains the origin of the Quebec werewolf.
The series aims to revive a cultural heritage passed down through oral tradition, placing it in a modern, humorous context for a new generation. Filming took place in nine different cities across Quebec over a period of six months, respecting the creatures and their respective seasons. Each episode offers nods to the towns featured by setting the action in local businesses or restaurants unique to each location.
The project’s interactive aspect comes from a direct connection established between the hosts and the audience. Throughout the episodes and on the show’s Facebook page, viewers are addressed informally (“tu” in French), invited to follow the show online, use the hashtag #létrangeprovince, and explore additional resources.
The project secured a web distribution agreement with the TVA Group and was available for free video-on-demand viewing on the Illico platform for 36 months.
